What not to miss in Rouen

Even with a packed Armada programme, leave time for the city itself. Rouen Cathedral — subject of Monet's famous series — anchors the old town, with the Gros-Horloge astronomical clock and the spot on the Place du Vieux-Marché where Joan of Arc was burned in 1431 just minutes away.

Wander the Aître Saint-Maclou, a rare medieval plague cemetery, and the cobbled lanes of timber-framed houses that make Rouen one of the best-preserved medieval cities in France. A guided walk packs the history into a couple of hours; a river cruise gives you the fleet from a completely different angle.
